PROJECT TITLE:
AFANG LANG QURANIC MEMORIZATION AND ISLAMIC SCHOOL WATER SANITATION AND HYGIENE PROJECT
It’s an undisputable fact that “Water is life” and the daily water requirement of communities varies from one community to another. For a community like that of Sukuta Nema in the Gambia, the need for water in their daily routines is paramount. The daily water requirement of a household of 3 people has been estimated by Abraham Maslow to be about 60 litters of clean water for drinking, cooking and personal washing which figure is much higher in a Muslim community such as Sukuta Nema due to the high diligence of cleanliness required for their daily activities. Water in Sukuta Nema an open well is Brackish, highly contaminated with debris thrown into the well by wind or children and there is no knowing what levels of contaminants are present in the water consumed by these people daily. This project will provide clean borehole water provided with filters, and water quality testing for 600 students at the school and the community of over 10,000 people that use the well in the school. Let us help prevent an outbreak of chronic water borne diseases in this highly vulnerable community.
Open water wells are highly susceptible to surface and ground water contaminations and due to their shallow nature, lack of surface cover and the socio-cultural attitudes of the people (pouring concussions or charms into the well to win the hearts and minds of those drinking from these wells). The Afang Lang School is a boarding school and the community where it’s located uses open water well for drinking, cooking, bathing, and other personal washing which if not stopped now, will cause major health issues and even death for people in the community. There is no pipe borne water supply in the area or any other alternative clean water source for this community. To make matters worse there is no effort to treat or filter the water for use.
Solution
This project will provide clean water supply for over 10,000 people and the school of 600 students resident in the school. For the first time this borehole will also be provided with water filters that will remove all contaminants in the water and provide water quality testing. The water quality testing to be conducted by the department of water resources will for the first time provide data on the quality of water being consumed by the community. Comparison of water from the open well and the borehole will for the first time provide an insight into what sort of aliments or diseases might be prevailing in the community.
This project will serve as model for future water projects in the country (providing filters and water quality testing) and help circumvent an outbreak of water borne disease in the area.
Africa is prone to water related disease outbreaks and the level of poverty in the Gambia 55% of the population living on less than USD 1 per day (WFP) coupled with the consumption of unclean water can result to serious health problems in the long run if the present situation continues.
Providing clean water supply to these people (over 10,000 people) will improve their resilience to water borne diseases by reducing the risk of consuming contaminated water. It will also decrease the level of vulnerability to all medical conditions related to consumption of contaminated water.
Healthy children means healthy future leaders by providing this project to this community we are contributing in the building of a healthier nation where kids are privileged to enjoy healthy environments for a better education like the old adage says “a sound mind in a sound body”. For the students to learn properly they must be healthy.
