Sacramento International Airport hosted another training on November 6 and 7th for all airport employees! Thank you for Denise Miracle for arranging for this training. Denise saved two teenage girls from trafficking as an alert AA Airport agent last year. See this article or this CBS News story.
AAI provided a training in 2014 was very well received and November 6th and 7th AAI trainers were survivors, Donna Hubbard & Kathryn Griffin Townsend and Denice Miracle helped train as well and involved the local Sheriff and law enforcement contacts.
The training was a huge success, with lots of positive feedback from the participants! TSA agent Mayfield said “all TSA agents should have this training”. One airline staff member told trainer Miracle that she had seen this behavior before but didn’t know what was happening. “I will know what to do know” she said. AAI speakers Donna Hubbard and Kathryn Griffin were powerful in the delivery of their stories of survival and success.
With more than 155 people moving through the program, we are spreading the word about recognizing and stopping human trafficking. The success of this event was brought about with much local support at the Sacramento Airport. AAI brought together local responders at the airport and Sacramento Sheriff’s officers, including: Rebecca Esty, Sacramento Sheriff Detective in Anti Human Trafficking division; Kurt D. Carpenter DHS/TSA Intelligence & Analysis Officer for the Sacramento Region; and Sheri Thompson-Duarte, Deputy Director of the Sacramento County Airport.
Special thanks to Robert Churchill, Southwest Safety compliance manager and Jason Reynolds Southwest Station Manager Sacramento. Robert provided snacks and drinks for both training sessions and unending moral support for our local trainer Denice Miracle during the planning of this event. Stacy Day, Sr. Specialist, Field Communications & Public Affairs for American Airlines flew in from Washington D.C. to observe the training. These folks were instrumental in the training coming together to show all sides of the complex operations at an airport, and all were involved to make it a success.
Detective Esty provided insight into the local situation in Sacramento involving human trafficking and prostitution. She provided information about local resources to help women and children in the Sacramento area. Mr. Carpenter provided important information into TSA’s Blue Campaign and knowledge about how important it is for TSA to notice and report human trafficking.
Most important are the people who attended the training. Staff participated from nearly all major carriers at the Sacramento Airport including: United, American, Southwest, Delta, Hawaiian, Contour and Boutique airlines. We had custodial staff, skycaps, wheel chair runners and front line airport operation staff come together to learn about the signs of human trafficking. Airports are a major hubs for traffickers and victims. Airline staff see thousands of people per week. These participants will now know the signs, who to call and what to do if they suspect human trafficking. Each of these people will tell someone about what they learned and the word will spread. Knowledge is power and we are spreading hope and awareness. Thanks to everyone involved in the Sacramento training session.
