A Harrowing Tale
Our brave friend Krzysztof Adamski endured a very dangerous situation when he first began taking needed supplies into Ukraine. He is just now able to talk about it. Here is his story:
He was on one of his first trips and had been in Ukraine for about three weeks working with a priest in Lviv and the White Orthodox church near Kiev. He had been traveling every day carrying food and medicine to villages between the two cities.
Near the last three days of this trip, he received a call from a mother in Poland, telling Krzysztof that her son was with his father in the northern part of Kiev. That city was under attack then and the mother asked Krzysztof to help bring her son to safety.
The father agreed to take his son to Krzysztof’s mother’s house near the Kiev airport. The father asked if he could also bring other children. Krzysztof agreed to help everyone as soon as they arrived at the airport.
The son was waiting when Krzysztof arrived but the other two children did not arrive and Krzysztof was forced to leave as the curfew was approaching. He and the mother’s son set off for Lviv driving through the southern parts of Kiev. Krzysztof was driving through a forest near Vinnica in the dark of night when a Bison suddenly charged onto the road in front of him!
To avoid hitting the animal, Krzysztof swerved right veering off the road into a ditch, ultimately hitting a tree. The roof of his car was almost completely destroyed and apparently Krzysztof temporarily lost consciousness. When he revived, he pulled himself out of the car through the window and then pulled the injured boy out of the car. He resuscitated the boy until an ambulance arrived. The boy was taken to the hospital and Krzysztof was arrested!
He spent three days in jail without a doctor, hospital or any medical assistance. A friend noticed through What’s App that Krzysztof’s phone was at the police station and started calling him. Realizing the situation was serious, the friend also called the Polish Ambassador to Ukraine who intervened and after the child’s health improved, Krzysztof was released. The ambassador told Krzysztof to leave Ukraine immediately.
After two weeks, the boy improved enough to be released and Krzysztof arranged an ambulance and helicopter to bring the child to Krakow.
Unfortunately, the mother intervened and made other arrangements for her son to return to Poland. The police in Ukraine confiscated Krzysztof’s car as evidence. They wanted to blame Krzysztof for the accident, alleging he had been drinking or on drugs…which, of course, was not true.
The boy’s father testified in court that Krzysztof was innocent of any wrong doing, that the incident had been a terrible accident. People who live around the forest where the accident occurred came to court to testify that bison do live in that forest. The police verified he tested negative for drugs and alcohol. The legal case just ended a few months again, in July.
Meanwhile the damaged car has been in Ukraine being repaired and Krzysztof borrowed money to buy another car he has been using to take supplies into Ukraine This unfortunate incident has not deterred his will to help the people of Ukraine.
Krzysztof just now told the story because the legal nightmare is over. Yet, Krzysztof’s family worries every time Krzysztof goes into Ukraine, but Krzysztof is un-phased, unafraid and determined to keep bring life-giving aid to Ukrainians.
He asked me to share this story to be transparent and also to stress how very, very grateful he is for the support Airline Ambassadors has given him. We have helped him help Ukraine Despite the accident, being arrested, totaling his car and the constant danger he is in, HE WILL NOT STOP. And he still needs and very much appreciates our support.
