SUMMARY

Access to safe, clean water and light is a basic necessity for all living beings. Yet, those living in many communities in the Sacred Valley of Peru have access to neither! Their water is contaminated with parasites and viruses like giardia and salmonella. Their home lighting is from smoky, lung-disease causing kerosene lanterns. This project will provide filters with safe drinking water and solar lanterns for families in six Andean communities, impacting over 2,500 people for one year.

THE CHALLENGE

The Sacred Valley is a remote area in Peru’s Andean highlands. Many communities lack road access which denies them access to piped or treated potable water They also lack sewer and electricity services from the government or private companies. The result is dirty drinking water that leaves them at risk for chronic diarrhea and other health problems. Often their only indoor lighting is from expensive, smoky kerosene lanterns. The smoke causes severe lung problems for children and the elderly.

THE SOLUTION

Project CLEAN in the Andes will distribute water filtration systems to the residents of these communities, enabling them to have potable water right in their homes and at the school. The distribution of solar lanterns will bring residents clean, renewable light to their stone homes in the Andes! With clean water and fresher air, their exposure to potential health problems is greatly lessened bringing a healthier, happier living environment for all.

By supplying fresh, safe water and clean light, the health and quality of life of these communities will improve immediately. The availability of clean water and light greatly lowers the risk of gastro-intestinal disease, lung disease, cancer, high blood pressure, and now Covid-19.
