Champions for Children, an employee volunteer program co-developed and sponsored by AA, Airline Ambassadors, the APFA and UNICEF, was started in 2006 and is open to any AA employee. Champions for Children volunteer to support the UNICEF Change for Good® program at AA, a program that has raised over US $60 million worldwide since its inception. International Flight Attendant "Champions" collect donations aboard many of AA's international flights, while Admirals Club "Champions" collect donations at select Admirals Club locations. Every AA employee is welcome to become a Champion for Children.
Learn more about UNICEF.

Champions raise funds on board flights and elsewhere to support UNICEF programs around the world. Champions are also the face of Change for Good, proudly sharing their humanitarian efforts and interests with passengers every day. They demonstrate their support for UNICEF formally through in-flight public announcements or in passing with colleagues who recognize the Champion for Children pin on their uniform.

The Change for Good® Program

Change for Good® -- an innovative partnership between UNICEF and the international airline industry -- was created in 1987 and is one of UNICEF's best known, and longest-running global fundraising campaigns. The concept is simple: travelers on international flights can donate their unused U.S. and foreign currency to benefit children. These contributions are used to provide lifesaving assistance to the developing world's poorest, most vulnerable children in over 150 countries where UNICEF has programs.

How It Works

Flight attendants on international flights volunteer to make onboard announcements and collect spare coins and paper currency from passengers. An in-flight video featuring AAI Mission Coordinators and AA Flight Attendants helps educate passengers about UNICEF projects that their funds support. It also explains the Change for Good program and invites passengers to contribute their spare change. Funds collected are transferred to UNICEF to help children in need worldwide.

UNICEF's mission is to save, protect, and improve children's lives. With child survival as its mantra, UNICEF is always ready to respond quickly and effectively wherever there are children in need. Operating in over 150 countries, UNICEF provides lifesaving medicine and immunizations, nutrition, clean water, HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention, and assistance in humanitarian emergencies.

UNICEF is made up of 7,000 dedicated UNICEF workers, 90% of whom live in the countries where UNICEF programs operate. These life-saving programs are funded entirely by voluntary contributions; UNICEF gets none of its funds from the United Nations budget. As responsible stewards for the world's vulnerable children, 96 percent of UNICEF's income is used for program services to help children, just 4% covers administrative costs.

A globally recognized, respected and trusted brand, UNICEF is the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. And, in 2006, UNICEF received a four-star rating -- its third -- from Charity Navigator, America's largest independent evaluator of charities.

Thank You
Partners of Change for Good are also grateful to our supporters of currency transport and conversion - Travelex and DFASS -- without whom the Change for Good program would not be possible. We are also grateful to the support of the APFA –the Association of Professional Flight Attendants. APFA was founded in 1977 and is the nation's only independent Flight Attendant union. APFA represents the Flight Attendants of American Airlines and is proud of a rich history of achievement in both the women's movement and human rights arena. While struggling to transform a once transitional job into a life-long career, APFA's noteworthy battles include: the right to work past the age of 32; the right to marry and have children; the right for males to hold the job; the abolishment of archaic weight standards; and the preservation of pension benefits. APFA will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2007.
